Richard Linklater first captured my attention with the movie Dazed and Confused. Linklater like Soderbergh is a director who has one foot in independent films and another in the mainstream. Unlike Soderbergh, Linklater has talent and makes really good movies that are both critically and commercially successful.
Fast Food Nation is Linklater’s second release this year, his first was A Scanner Darkly which was based on Phillp K. Dicks book of the same name. Fast Food Nation which is also based on a book Chronicles the fast food industry and how it affects globalization, immigration policies and other social factors.
The only problem I see with this movie is Wilmer Valderama. He just seems like such a twat. Especially in this interview.
Emilio Esteves spent years writing this movie and spent an even longer time trying to find funding for his take on the Robert Kennedy assassination. He ended securing financing and casting a great ensemble cast made up of friends and young Hollywood starlets. This movie seems interesting and may be worth of viewing.
More likely than not I will catch this on Dvd.
Oh yeah, The last movie Mr. Esteves directed was Rated X and it was about porn. I caught it on HBO a couple of years ago and I thought it was really funny.
The word Genius has lost its edge. Along with "interesting" genius has been over used and misused to the point where it has lost most of its flavor. When using the word interesting it no longer carries the weight and validity it once had. The same goes for genius.
Christopher Guest, the director of For your Consideration is both interesting and a genius.
Seriously.
If you don't believe me watch any of his movies.
First let me warn you. His movies aren't for everyone. This does not imply that if you don't find his movies funny it means that you are stupid. It just means that you do not share his sense of humor.
just saw Fast Food Nation, it's an impactful flick to say the least... earlier today i passed up a sausage mcmuffin because of it. Evidently it is worth passing up fast food for more than the obvious health reasons.
There are three movies opening this weekend that are more likely than not going to get my hard earned dollars. Casino Royale, Fast Food Nation, and Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny.
Here are some movie trailers to help you kill time at work.
There are two things that make this Bond movie interesting to me. Eva Green and the fact that the producers are going back to the Ian Flemming books. Also, many sites that have had the chance to preview this movie say it is a departure from the Pierce Brosnan era James Bond movies which can only mean that these are good. Reviews are also saying that it is bloody and action packed and that Eva Green is a perfect Bond Girl.
For a list of the worst Bond girls according to Entertainment Weekly click HERE
Here are some pictures of Eva Green just because.
And
She really is the only reason why anyone saw the Dreamers. That movie just sucked but she was naked throughout most of the movie.
My question is when did everyone become obsessed with penguins?
Last year everyone was talking about March of the Penguins which I avoided and will continue to avoid no matter how many people tell me that it is good. Penguins do not fascinate me and I know that they won't entertain me. What is so exciting about penguins? They swim, they waddle and they don't fly. Their story doesn't entice me and I just don't get the fascination.
Happy Feet stars a bunch of A-list celebrities who got paid an extraordinary amount of money to talk into a microphone for 2 days.
Watch this only if you have kids if you don't you have no reason to be anywhere near this movie. If your excuse is " but my girlfriend wants to watch this movie" I think it is time you look for someone new.
Let's go to Prison stars Will Arnett who was one of the breakout stars from the short lived and unreasonably cancelled Arrested Development. It is directed by a man I hold personally responsible for making the Simpsons funny again and is most known for his work on Mr. Show Bob Odenkirk.
This movie could be about cats fighting over a piece of yarn and I would still watch this. Odenkirk is not so much a comedian as he is a humorist. He brings wit and style to any project that he associates himself with. However, the last movie Odenkirk was associated with sucked really bad. If you had the chance to see Run Ronnie Run I would like to apologize on behalf of Mr. Odenkirk.
If you aren't aware of Tenacious D here is an example of their music and lyrics.
"Fuck Her Gently"
This is a song for the ladies But fellas listen closely You don't always have to fuck her hard In fact sometimes that's not right to do Sometimes you've got to make some love And fuckin give her some smoochies too Sometimes ya got to squeeze Sometimes you've got to say please Sometime you've got to say hey I'm gonna Fuck you softly I'm gonna screw you gently I'm gonna hump you sweetly I'm gonna ball you discreetly And then you say hey I bought you flowers And then you say wait a minute sally I think I got somethin in my teeth Could you get it out for me That's fuckin teamwork Whats your favorite posish? That's cool with me Its not my favorite But I'll do it for you Whats your favorite dish? Im not gonna cook it But ill order it from Zanzibar And then I'm gonna love you completely And then I'll fuckin fuck you discreetly And then I'll fucking bone you completely But then I'm gonna fuck you hard Hard
This movie has been 6 years in the making and is sure to kick so much ass.
I heard Jack Black and Kyle Glass on the Howard Stern show yesterday and they both said they took a huge pay cut just to make this movie. They only took a pay cut because they wanted complete creative control over their movie. If this movie sucks they have no one to blame but themselves.
Yeah, this movie just can't suck.
More Trailers tomorrow....
To be Continued.
Oh yea, as always click on the movie titles to watch the trailers.
It is now official, Borat is both a critical and commercial success. It seems as though scaling down the initial release was a bold yet brilliant move by the Executives at Fox. By scaling down the release they made Borat an instant hit and a conversational centerpiece. Interesting enough Borat is one of those rare movies that instead of loosing a percentage of its audience it actually gained an audience. It seems as though all the press Borat is receiving both positive and negative is helping Fox sell more movie tickets. By the time this movie is done making money I am sure it will be well into the $400 million mark of course I am including Dvd sales and Tv rights.
The Santa Clause 3 maintained its grip on Borat’s coat tails and is still in the second spot for its second straight week. This movie might not be the failure everyone thought it might be. Flushed Away also kept its same spot from last weekend at number 3. Seems though none of the new releases had any impact on last weekends releases. I was sure that Will Ferrell’s Stranger than Fiction was going to cause major damage this past weekend. It was a sad and disappointing weekend for him at number 4.
The Departed and The Prestige both are keeping a strong grip on the top 10 with $5 million and $4 million respectively.
Seeing the box office results for A Good Year put a smile on my face. The last time Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe teamed up they made close to half a Billion dollars. This time they couldn’t even managed to make $5 million. This is the second bomb for Crowe and hopefully this will humble Mr. Crowe. Even though I doubt this guy is in it for the money. I am sure he has plenty of money and now only does it for the craft. Still, I really dislike him.
This weekend saw a lot of disappointing openings and a few surprises. Borat is going to continue to make a disgusting amount of money for Fox and solidify Sacha Baron Cohen’s greatness.
Next week the new 007 movie is coming out and I am excited to see it.
As always click on the title of any of the movies to watch the trailer.
Tvguide is reporting that the peacock network has just picked up Studio 60 on the sunset strip for a full season. If you have been reading this blog attentively you might have noticed that I am a huge fan of this show and was amazed by its series premier with that out of the way you are going to be puzzled by this next question.
Why?
Why was this show picked up for a full season? It is doing horrible in the ratings and is losing more viewers than it is gaining viewers. Also the quality of the show is going down and the story lines are becoming even more ridiculous.
I am sure the writers on SNL don't really care about social change when they are writing each sketch.
As much as I do enjoy this show I am starting to find more reasons to dump on the show than to watch it. My relationship with this show is now based on familiarity rather than love. And that makes me sad.
I had high hopes for this program. It had everything to make it a success, a great cast, great director and an amazing screen writer. Still it managed to become self parody and on its way down the ratings toilet it became preachy.
Now back to the original question. Why was this show picked up for another season. I have two theories.
My first theory is that NBC is so hungry for a hit that they are willing to spend loads of money to get it. They also believe in Sorkin who has come through for them in the past. My second theory is...well it's not really a theory it's based on an actual fact. The fact is Studio 60 is actually doing very well in a very important demographic. That demographic is Adult males who earn an average of $66,000 a year. Which means we are sure to see a more Lexus commercials coupled with Apple branded products.
I hope this show can turn itself around and become something worth watching again. I really am rooting for this show. I really am.
Oh I forgot to mention one thing...Studio 60 is getting its ass handed to them by the show What about Brain. The J.J. Abrams drama about a 30 year old who isn't married.
just saw Fast Food Nation, it's an impactful flick to say the least... earlier today i passed up a sausage mcmuffin because of it. Evidently it is worth passing up fast food for more than the obvious health reasons.
